Rachel Dioso-Villa
Rachel Dioso-Villa is a mixed-media artist and criminologist based in Meanjin/Brisbane. Her
academic research focuses on miscarriages of justice in Australia and her artwork explores
similar issues of human vulnerability and resilience in the face of adversity. The selection of
materials and techniques she employs is a crucial aspect of her artistic process, steeped in
symbolism and charged with emotion. Bright colours are used to emphasize hope and
optimism especially in times of struggle.
She has been a finalist in various art prizes and exhibits widely in group shows throughout
Queensland and interstate. In 2023, she received the People's Choice Award at the Lethbridge Small Scale Art Award for her painting, ;Can You See Me Now? shedding light on the challenges faced by wrongfully convicted women in the criminal justice system.
