This artwork is part of a series contemplating the expectations and limitations imposed on women. The lunar cycle a metaphor for the menstrual cycle, itself historically considered an important factor in the "neuroses" of women. Female in tuition (understood in different terms today) was viewed with suspicion, with witchcraft suggested in lieu.
