Carlton Cox

Carlton has been developing his skills as a linocut artist for more than 30 years, and gradually honing his own original style. Carlton gained his printmaking knowledge from private tuition, University of Tasmania, Glasgow Print Studio, and numerous workshops and/or masterclasses both nationally and abroad.

Carlton’s images are inspired by his local surrounds, travels, and experiences.  Carlton uses the traditional technique of linocut, which requires the carving of printing blocks (negatives) that are inked and hand pressed one colour at a time to build up an image in layers.

A small limited edition of handmade original art works are created from the printing-blocks, each one with its own subtle difference. Each linocut takes several weeks to produce, from the intricate carving process to the hand-pressing of inked blocks onto heavy cotton paper. Carlton’s colours are blended from highly pigmented linseed oil based inks.

Carlton’s studio is situated in the countryside and provides a tranquil environment in which to work. Printmaking is a detailed technical process where the artist first creates the image as a negative. It is very different to working directly onto paper or canvas. ‘The complicated and challenging technical nature of printmaking is part of the attraction’, says Carlton.

Many of Carlton’s original artworks are also published greeting cards.
