Barbara is a native of Brisbane where she spent the first thirty years of her life. For the next thirty, she lived in Boston where she completed her education in Nuclear Medicine Technology and then Developmental English. She taught in the University of Massachusetts system at one of the Community Colleges where she held Professorships in both subjects while raising her two children.

In 1999, Nev re-entered her life after a 44 year absence and they married the following year. In 2001, she retired from her position and they returned to Australia to live. Barbara was always interested in sewing and began quilting but quickly decided that it was the design process and not the quilting which maintained her interest. This lead to painting fabric for quilt panels which combined her love of fabric and colour and eventually to a rather unique form of fabric collage.

She begins with white cotton fabric which is then painted in different colour panels. The next step is drying and ironing and the application of an adhesive to the back of the panels. The fabric is then cut into shapes and the picture is composed. After composition, the whole picture is ironed and is now ready for the final painting of highlights and contrasts. This style of painting lends itself to buildings and fantasy subjects and is really part of “The World According to Barb”. Nev adds to her work with his colourful and expert framing! They are a good team.

Nev and Barbara are both interested in travel within Australia and the rest of the world where Nev takes many of the photographs which translate into their individual paintings. Italy is a favourite destination. Life is very full and rather delightful with family and art.
